    As a Spanish Medical Interpreter at Banner Estrella Medical Center, you will be an important part of the healthcare team, providing English/Spanish interpretation services for patients/companions with limited English proficiency that we encounter throughout the hospital, including patient/provider communication. You will be involved during every aspect of the patient stay, from registration to discharge. Effective communications skills and knowledge of medical terminology is required.

    Completion of a Medical Interpreter training program highly preferred

    One year of work experience as a Medical Interpreter required

    Written and oral language assessment will be required

    This is a Full-time position, working 32 hours per week. The hours will be from 7:30am-4pm every Monday, as well as every Thursday, Friday and Saturday 4:30pm-1am. Holidays and weekends are required in this role. Enjoy a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential as well as an 18% Night Shift differential!

    POSITION SUMMARY

    This position provides interpretation for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and their families. This position acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between healthcare providers and patients and families.

    CORE FUNCTIONS

    1. Acts as a conduit of information for all clinical services including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures to LEP patients.

    2. Interprets patient and/or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.

    3. Documents accurately, completely and clearly all interpretation services.

    4. Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between patients/family, as it relates to medical care.

    5. Acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between health care staff and patients and families. Confers with supervisor on any unusual situations. Positions are facility based with no budgetary responsibility. Internal customers: All levels of nursing management and staff, medical staff, volunteers and all other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. External Customers: family members.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Must possess a level of knowledge typically acquired through the completion of an associate's degree in communications or health care related field or equivalent experience.

    Requires fluency in English and target language of interpretation and a proficiency level typically achieved with 1 year of experience as an interpreter. Requires an understanding of medical terminology. Effective 9/1/2019, all new hires or transfers into the role must pass a written and oral exam with a score of 75% or above. Must demonstrate effective communication skills, problem solving, strong human relations skills, organizational and time management skills and flexibility in responding to multiple demands.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor's degree in communications or health care related field.

    Completion of a medical interpreter skills training course including learning the code of ethics and standards of practice.

    Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
