Locations and hours are subject to change based on business needs.The Lead Pharmacy Technician providespharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by demonstratingproficiency in knowledge, skills, and leadership in a designated area ofpharmacy operations. Examples of areas that a Lead Pharmacy Technician mayinclude the sterile products area, RobotRX operations, general pharmacyoperations, operating room, non-sterile product packaging areas, and controlledsubstances. The Lead Pharmacy Technician is responsible for coordinating dailyactivities with pharmacists and pharmacy management, mentoring and instructingnew technicians in designated areas of responsibility, and developing policiesand procedures optimize general workflow and better provide effective patientcare and pharmacy services. These services are provided in compliance withstate and federal regulations, The Joint Commission Standards, and the missionand policies of the hospital and department. Responsibilities:+ Create and lead departmentalquality improvement activities in order to continually improve andevaluate pharmaceutical care as reflected by operational and patient careindicators. Provide direction and leadership for designated technicalaspects associated with medication preparation in the pharmacy department.Oversee the coordination of daily activities, organization of duties andresponsibilities, and the development of workflow guidelines and othernecessary tools to maximize productivity in designated area. Assist intraining other Pharmacy Technicians in determining their ability tofunction in designated area of the Pharmacy department.+ Assist in the procurement,accountability, storage, preparation and distribution of investigationaland study drugs.+ Provide feedback to the needsof the department and other associates in a respectful and effectivemanner consistent with UPMC values. Exhibit effectiveness duringinteractions with other hospital personnel in a manner supportive of ourculture of service excellence, with enthusiasm for customer service and apassion to offer an outstanding patient experience.+ Develop workflow guidelines,policies and procedures, and other necessary tools to maximizeproductivity, standardize practice, and maintain regulatory readiness inarea of responsibility. Oversee and instruct other associates in the designatedarea regarding day-to-day activities. Regularly inspects the designatedarea to ensure that it is clean and well-maintained.+ Provide progressive technicalknowledge, coordination of activities, support of new initiatives, andcreates a shared experience and support among associates within designatedarea.+ Finalize sales using cashregister, follow proper cash handling policies and procedures+ Prepare reports as required tosupport pharmacy activities. Demonstrate a service orientation towardpatients, staff and visitors. Conveys a positive, professional image atall times. Demonstrate a high level of knowledge understanding the lawsassociated with the purchasing and distribution of controlled substances.+ Demonstrate a high level of accuracyand skill in maintaining controlled substance records and the distributionprocess for controlled substances. Audit and maintain accurate records forcontrolled substances. Assure that all such drugs are stored and dispensedin compliance with Federal, State, and Department Regulations. Demonstratecompetency in performing high skill level activities in designated areasuch as sterile products/IV admixtures, controlled substances, robotoperation, packaging operations, and operating room.+ Accurately completedepartmental documentation and billing by the end of each scheduled shiftin accordance with department procedures.+ Distribution: Participate inthe distribution of medication including medication cassettes, emergencymedication carts and the delivery of controlled substances per departmentpolicy and state and federal requirements+ Maintain all pertinentdocumentation as required. This includes eye wash logs, refrigerator logs,perpetual inventory logs etc. Maintain all patient information and records.Maintain the pharmacy computer system as required. Actively engages inmaintenance of data, records and files, and ensures compliance is metthrough record keeping.+ Procure and maintain adequateinventory levels on daily basis in applicable areas such pharmacymedication stock rooms, automated medication carousels, and automateddispensing machines.+ Ensure that all medications inall areas have been safely and securely stored according to Department ofHealth, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.Comply with Federal and State laws such as HIPAA, regulations such asOSHA, and PBM contracting requirements such as FWA and CMS.+ Assist in filling medicationorders through correct labeling, counting and stocking practices. Initialand date products as required.+ Completes and documents allassigned medication storage area inspections monthly and conducts followup as appropriate.+ Calculates dilution and dosingproblems, performs weights and measures and performs billing functions.Qualifications+ Completion of high schooldiploma or equivalent or Completion of an accredited pharmacy technicianprogram.+ Five years of experience as aPharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Operation Specialist.+ Demonstrated leadership skillsin current position.+ Demonstrated competency in alldetailed aspects of the Lead Pharmacist Technician's designated area:+ Createand evaluate policy, procedure, and training materials regarding operationalworkflow+ Take anactive role in the training of fellow staff members in one's area of expertise.
