  • UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is hiring a casual (per diem) Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to support the Histology Lab! This role will be scheduled varied daylight shifts Monday through Friday.

    In this role, you will have the opportunity to experience a high-volume, fast-paced histology lab that exists in a busy, urban hospital setting but still maintains a community hospital feel. The histology team at Magee works closely together to deliver excellent patient care, while also providing career development and teaching opportunities.

    Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Histotechnician role starts at $21.86/hr.

    Responsibilities

    • Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.

    • Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures and work practices.

    • Demonstrates progression of skils towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

    • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

    • Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

    • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

    • Supports academic mission of department.

    • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

    • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

    • Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

    Histotechnician

    • High school diploma.

    • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam:

    • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR;

    • Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

    • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.

    Histotechnologist

    • Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):

    • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR;

    • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.

    • Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist.

    • 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    • Am Society Clinical PathologyHistology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 1 year of hire.

    • American Society for Clinical Pathology
