    Job Summary

    Provides professional veterinary services to support or manage oversight of all animal care and use functions involving laboratory animals. Develops, implements and controls procedures related to the acquisition, maintenance, quarantine, and disposition of all research animals including provision of appropriate clinical, preventive and emergency veterinary care for various species. Provides support in protocol design, facility design, biosecurity practices, breeding and genetic management, occupational health program, equipment procurement, animal model selection and development, surgical services and animal and colony health monitoring programs. Ensures compliance with established company, regulatory and industry standards. Interfaces with various departments and clients serving as internal/external consultant, providing technical, regulatory and clinical support. Requires current knowledge of various lab animal species, new developments in laboratory animal medicine, surgery, and related sciences and awareness of current changes in laboratory animal science and animal husbandry practices. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories as pertains to the veterinary and comparative medicine field. Maintains knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements. Represents the company on a regional, national or international level in professional matters that support the company and its animal care and use programs. May advise senior management in animal welfare, care and use matters as they relate to application of new technology, the use of alternatives, support of the 3Rs and new animal models. May conduct research projects to support company business goals and publish/present results externally.

    The following are responsibilities related to theClinical Veterinarianposition:

    • Manage health care for the animal colony by providing clinical care and preventive medicine support.

    • Perform surgical support and provide anesthesia, surgical and analgesic technical expertise/advice to facilitate protocol development.

    • Develop and deliver training for staff.

    • Ensure that internal and external applications, reports and other materials are prepared and submitted as required.

    • May participate in the response to internal/external inspections and quality assurance audits.

    • Provide support for activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). May serve on the committee as well.

    • Perform consultation and collaboration with Study Directors.

    • Ensure facility is in compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines and standards. (e.g. USDA,FDA,AAALAC).

    • All other duties as assigned.

    The following are minimum qualifications related to theClinical Veterinarian position:

    • Education: Veterinary degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.) or international equivalent.

    • Experience: Zero to two years related experience with animal care and surgical techniques. Strong preference for experience in a research/lab animal/GLP environment.

    • An equivalent combinationof the above may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute.

    • Certification/Licensure: Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state required. Ability to practice veterinary medicine in the work state highly desirable.

    • Other: Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Ability to organize, prioritize work and meet deadlines. Good communication skills.
