Fortune teamed up with Great Place to Work to compile a list of the best workplaces for millennials in 2015. Great Place to Work surveyed more than 85,000 millennials to find out which companies do the best job of creating great workplaces for members of Generation Y. Power Home Remodeling Group in Chester, Pennsylvania, took the top spot on the list, with David Weekley Homes and Allied Wallet rounding out the top three.
The chief executive officer of Great Place to Work, Michael Bush, says the best organizations are always looking at employee feedback and searching for ways to improve. Every company on the top 100 list makes a real effort to create a culture where employees feel valued and have opportunities for professional development. It's important to identify the best workplaces for millennials because members of Generation Y have a lot of power as employees and consumers. In fact, experts expect millennials to make up 75 percent of the workforce within a mere 10 years.
While surveying millennials, Great Place to Work asked each participant to answer questions related to professional development and career satisfaction. Overall, the survey found that millennial-friendly workplaces are ahead of their competitors when it comes to paying fair wages and including employees in profit-sharing programs. Several high-tech companies made the list, but insurance companies, financial services firms and construction companies also found their way into the roundup.
The 2015 list of best workplaces for millennials includes some familiar faces: Twitter, Google, Salesforce, Yelp and Build-A-Bear Workshop all made appearances. The list also includes a few companies that don't typically dominate the covers of business magazines or the front page of your newspaper: West Monroe Partners, CWS Apartment Homes and Nugget Market are considered some of the best workplaces for millennials. Wegmans Food Markets, a perennial favorite on Fortune's annual list of best companies to work for, also appears on the 2015 list of millennial-friendly workplaces.
Survey participants were asked to indicate if their employers pay people fairly for the work they do, give employees a fair share of company profits and involve employees in important decisions. Nearly 18 percent of employees said they receive a fair share of the profits generated by the company. Just over 15 percent of those surveyed said they feel their companies pay people fairly. Fourteen percent of the survey participants said members of management involve employees in decisions that affect their work environment or job status. The survey included a total of 58 questions related to the characteristics associated with a great workplace.
The best workplaces for millennials tend to emphasize fairness when it comes to compensation, decision-making and professional growth. If you aren't happy at your current job, consult the 2015 list to see if you can find better opportunities in your field.
