If you are looking for a job in construction, or thinking about changing careers, doing specific things in the right way will help you get the results for which you are looking. You can know what to do, but if you do not do it, you will fail. What is worse is not knowing what to do, and not knowing you don’t know it.
Some years ago I was playing in a men’s amateur baseball league. Having only modest success with my hitting, I sought out the services of a professional hitting instructor by the name of Bruce Fields. Specifically, I needed to learn how to improve my mechanics of hitting a baseball. At the time Bruce was a coach for the Toledo Mud Hens, a Triple A professional baseball team and part of the Detroit Tigers Baseball organization. Afterwards, he eventually served as hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers from 2003 to 2005. Currently Fields is the minor league hitting coordinator for the Cleveland Indians organization.
Bruce certainly had the credentials to teach me how to hit a baseball that is being pitched at the speed of 80 to 100 miles per hour. Let me tell you how he did it. First he asked me to stand in the batting cage and swing my baseball bat. After about five minutes of analyzing my swing he pulled me aside and he explained to me the concept of hitting. He then went on to tell me what I was doing wrong. From there he introduced me to a set of exercises designed to teach me how to develop my swing for a smooth, accurate and power packed stroke. Within eight short weeks I had developed the swing that allowed me to make direct contact with the baseball. As the season unfolded, my skills translated into a plethora of base hits. It was exciting as opposing teams started to notice as I had one of the best batting averages in my league.
Like Bruce Fields had taught me, when you can identify what you are doing wrong, you can then determine what you must do, to do it right. When it comes to changing construction jobs or changing your career, if you follow the same concept, you can find the job of your dreams.
Too often, job changers have no idea of what they need to do differently. They do not have a strategy and they easily get discouraged. Having a career coach or a mentor to help you specifically identify your areas of weakness and developing a plan of action can be the key to your success.
