It seems that everywhere you look these days, there are people who are out of work, looking for a job or just really, really hate the job they have. For those lucky enough to still have their job, they spend their days stuck in traffic to get to work, sit in a little cubicle for 8 hours and then fight traffic again to get back home. No matter how hard they work or how much money they make, the still aren't happy.
But, there has to be some people who really love their jobs. Right? According to an article at Mint, there are some people who are actually very happy at their jobs. Even though the hours are long and they aren't earning millions of dollars each year, they still rate themselves as being very happy or extremely happy with their career choices.
So who are these lucky people? Here are the top ten happiest jobs:
- Clergy
- Firefighters
- Travel Agents
- Mechanics and Repair people
- Architects
- Special Education Teachers
- Actors and Directors
- Scientific Researchers
- Industrial Engineers
- Airline Pilots and Navigators
So, that made me wonder what it was that made these people more likely to be happy at their jobs? Maybe it is because, for the most part, these are all service jobs. This means that they have the opportunity to interact with people on a daily basis. Most of them actually get to see the first hand results of their efforts. I think that these things must have a large impact on their daily job satisfaction. But, still there must be more to it.
When I looked over the list again, I realized that each of these professions are ones that people enter because they have a true passion for the work. No one decides one day that firefighting is a good choice because of the pay. Clergy members, Special education teachers and actors all are careers where people feel that they have a true calling and if they didn't, they would certainly pick a different field.
Doing what you love can make a huge difference to your overall life happiness. As a culture, over the past decade, we have created a bias against manual labor and service jobs. The focus is on college and high earning power. While that can be a good choice for some people, let's not forget that we need mechanics and travel agents. Some people love to take things apart and figure out how they work and get satisfaction out of making them work better, and learning a skill or trade may be an excellent choice for them.
When you are looking at your career, if you aren't happy with what you do, think about where your passions are and what you need to do to be able to work at something you love. Your whole life might change for the better.
