Updating your resume is a task that most people avoid because it seems daunting, but once you get started it’s basically a breeze. And these three quick tips make it even easier.

1. Have it saved as a Google or Word Doc.

Keep your resume saved in one of these formats to allow for easy on the fly editing. Google Docs automatically save your changes and you can export it to a word document and continue making changes there at any time. Also, most employers use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) or Artificial Intelligence (AI) to screen your resume and automatically pull information from it. This AI recognizes Word docs best. Otherwise you may find yourself filling out the same information that was already in your resume, AKA the worst thing ever! Don’t worry about printing your resume either. Only bring printed copies to interviews just in case you need them.

2. Don’t Wait! Update your resume ASAP.

It’s easy to push off updating your resume. It’s definitely not the best way to spend your weekend but it is extremely important. Once you get into the job search, you will find it to be a long and arduous journey. Time is invaluable and you never know how long it may take for potential employers to get back to you. Nothing is worse than submitting a resume that is out of date or does not include information pertinent to the specific job you are applying for. The moment you leave an old position or enter a new one, update your resume. The details will be fresh in your mind and you will be able to describe what you did in perfect detail.

3. Find people with similar resumes

It can be hard trying to figure out the best way to describe your previous positions. Sometimes plain language doesn’t work. Employers love seeing certain keywords in your resume. It lets them know that you know what you are talking about and are right for the job. These keywords can be very difficult to find. The best course of action is to go online and find resumes for the position you had! You are bound to find someone who has more experience in resume writing than you and who has the perfect buzzwords to draw the eyes of employers. Instead of filling your resume with every mundane task you accomplished find better resumes to take inspiration from and pack a better punch with less words.

So, there you have three simple things you can do right now to improve your job search and the creation for your resume.
