Westview - Surgery RN Department: Westview - Surgery Schedule: PRN (as needed) Shift: PRN (hours/shifts as needed by unit) Hours: variable Job Details: * DUTIES: * Places equipment and supplies in operating room and arranges instruments, according to instructions. Applies aseptic operating room techniques and procedures. * Assists team members to place and position patient on table. * Scrubs arms and hands and dons gown and gloves. Assists team members into gowns and gloves. * Hands instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures and performs other tasks as directed by surgeon during procedures. May put dressings on patient following procedure. * Counts sponges, needles and instruments before and after procedure. * Washes and sterilizes equipment using germicides and sterilizers. Cleans operating room. * May perform other duties such as circulating duties, breaks, room turnovers, handling specimens and transportation. * Applies nursing process to patient, before, during and after procedure. * Provides psycho-social support to patients and families as needed. * Ascertains that all necessary forms and tests were completed prior to surgery and notifies manager of any discrepancies. * May assume supervisory functions for a given period of time in the absence of the manager. * Participates in staff development programs to improve skills. Maintains current knowledge and standards regarding care and use of equipment. * Administers medications as ordered. Maintains supply of fluids, such as plasma, saline, blood and glucose for use during operation. * Recognizes emergency situations and makes appropriate interventions. * Maintains complete and accurate surgical records. * Takes call as needed. * May perform duties as PACU RN as needed. * Assists anesthesiologist with intubation and anticipates anesthesiologist's needs. * Stocks room with appropriate amount of supplies. * Assists with maintaining clean, safe, comfortable surgical environment. * Maintains confidentiality. Performs duties with honesty, fairness, ethics and good corporate citizenship to ensure corporate compliance. EXPERIENCE:One year experience preferred EDUCATION:ASN/BSN in nursing LICENSURE: * Indiana RN license; * CPR certification; * ACLS preferred SKILLS: * Use common sense and special medical skills to care for the sick or handicapped. * Understand technical information from a variety of sources. * Use eyes, hands and fingers with skill. * Work fast and efficiently in an emergency. * Communicate with people when they are sick, handicapped or nervous. * Change from one duty to another frequently. * Deal with a variety of different types of people. * Record information completely and accurately.
