Purpose:
The Battelle Toxicology unit is seeking a full-time technician able to work first shift with the expectation of working overtime, weekends and rotating holidays. This position is located in Columbus Ohio. This position provides support to the veterinary program along with the potential to support other areas as needed within HLSGB. This job requires a detail-oriented and dedicated individual that is able, as needed, to follow the regulatory requirements for animal care standards. This individual will interact with the clinical veterinarian as well as others and requires the desire to learn, ability to work in a team environment, along with being both reliable and punctual. Daily tasks may be assisting other more senior staff in completion of daily activities or working alone on the assigned tasks. Relocation is not available. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.
Duties:
· First shift, full time position with overtime, weekend and holiday rotation.
· Understands and follows relevant Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Protocol requirements regarding all laboratory activities assigned or engaged in.
· Uses proper record keeping in order to document work activities.
· Maintains a good working knowledge of laboratory equipment and experimental procedures and applies this knowledge in the performance of assigned laboratory tasks.
· Conducts standard as well as non-standard tasks with limited direct supervision
· Reads assigned SOPs promptly to remain in compliance with regulations.
· Follows health and safety requirements that are posted or within relevant SOPs.
· Learn new tasks to expand knowledge as opportunities present themselves.
· Assists and/or directs other technicians in completion of daily activities.
· Participate in veterinary consultation and patient follow-up.
· Participate in physical exams and preparation of animal care records/plans.
· Perform animal treatments/medications under the supervision of the veterinarian.
· Use proper record keeping to document activities; perform data reviews; participate in report preparation.
· Maintain equipment and supplies; ordering supplies and tracking inventory.
· Administer and monitor analgesia and anesthesia.
· Assist with medical and surgical procedures including prep for surgery.
· Perform specialized veterinary lab procedure and tests including fecal analysis, CSF taps, cystocentesis, intrathalamic taps (aid), intubation, etc.
· Operate or aid in the operation of specialized veterinary lab equipment such as X-ray, ultrasound, anesthesia, digital imaging conversion programs, ultrasound archiving programs, high frequency radio surgery setup and operation, etc.
· Maintain animal record data base.
Additional responsibilities as required:
· Qualify for and maintain eligibility for U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance.
· Qualify for and maintain eligibility in certain U.S. Government programs (CPRP and BPRP).
· Be immunized with IND and/or licensed vaccines against laboratory pathogens.
· Respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations.
· Be aware of and follow Chemical agent facility and Bio-facility requirements.
· May assist in areas including animal care, cage wash, chemistry, pathology at the Columbus or West Jefferson facility locations based on needs and the skills of the technician.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
A minimum of 3 years of laboratory or clinical experience is required. Additionally, this position requires a 4-year degree and certification as a LAT or LATG (preferred). In lieu of a degree, science coursework or equivalent laboratory experience may be substituted. The individual must be detailed-oriented, organized, dedicated, and work well in a team setting within a diverse group. Required job attributes are a desire to learn new skills and the ability to work well with others. The candidate must be reliable, punctual, have good general husbandry skills and able to work wearing a variety of respirators. Must be innovative and able to work on own with little supervision. Essential activities of this position which cannot be reasonably accommodated with assistive devices, task reassignment, work area modifications, etc. include: standing, walking, balancing, kneeling, crouching/stooping bending, reaching, grasping, dexterity, feeling, reading, hearing, speaking, responding to colors, color coding, and color changes. Must be able to lift 50 lbs waist level or below and 12.5 lbs above shoulder level. Special Duties: Carcinogen Use, Laboratory Animal Handler, Air Purifying Respirator (including 'dust mask' and PAPR), Bloodborne Pathogens and/or Infectious Waste Handling.
