Job Details:
Essential Function:
Responsible for managing the flow of sterile instruments, supplies and equipment through the Sterile Processing Department with awareness of all activities within the hospital departments that are supported by the sterile processing department. Functions as the central point of contact for the Sterile Processing Department staff, Infection control, and nursing departments. Manages all internal and external communications within the department and throughout the hospital. Accountability is measured through number of grievances per shifts worked, patient satisfaction scores, productivity, and employee engagement.
1. Job requires detail-oriented mentality and ability to work independently. Lack of consistency in detail could result in increased errors in processing sterile equipment, noncompliance with infection control standards, breech of patient safety initiatives and lower staff productivity.
2. Uses independent judgment and decision-making to organize work and establish priorities.
3. Responsible for department metrics related compliance with grievances per shifts worked, patient satisfaction scores, productivity, and employee engagement.
4. Responsible for department metrics related compliance with infection control and AAMI (Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) standards in instrument and equipment processing turnover times.
5. Facilitate aligning the Department's vision and goals with the organization's strategic initiatives.
6. Investigates all incidents, accidents, complaints and grievances in collaboration with Corporate Compliance, and Risk Management.
7. Must possess strong relationship building skills, function without supervision/direction and have high personal standards of delivery of safety initiatives.
8. Must be able to creatively problem solve, pay attention to detail, possess critical thinking skills, decision making abilities and have the ability to see the overall picture.
9. Has 24 hour accountability of the Sterile Processing department.

Other Job Functions
1. Maintains compliance of the sterile processing department with the standards set by the JCAHO, AAMI and Infection Control.
2. Ability to lead the department in performance improvement activities and facilitates active participation of the staff.
3. Develops the yearly operational budget and maintains fiscal compliance.
4. Prioritizes capital budget requests and maintains communication with the Director of Surgical Services assessing equipment and instrument needs.
5. Responsible for the departments staffing schedule and maintains acceptable staffing levels to support clinical requirements.
6. Holds monthly staff meetings and reports to the Director of Surgical Services weekly
7. Assesses the education needs of the sterile processing technicians and coordinates delivery of education, orientation, in-services, and process improvement projects with the Perioperative
Education/Performance Improvement coordinator.
8. Monitors function and quality of equipment necessary for decontamination and sterilization process. Reports results to the Infection Control Department.
9. Participates as an active member of the medical center committees as assigned.
10. Networks with the nursing departments to develop and refine the process for sterilization, decontamination and processing of instruments, supplies and equipment for patient needs.

Qualifications:
A. Education and Training: Graduate from an approved school of surgical technology or three to five (3-5) years of Sterile Processing Department management experience. Central Sterilization certification with AAMI is preferred. BLS. Basic Computer skills needed.
B. Experience: 3-5 years sterile department experience or Operating Room experience. Five (5) years management experience is preferred.
C. Affiliations: AORN membership is preferred. Membership in the NC Association for Hospital Central Service Personnel preferred.

Environmental and Special Demands: Must have excellent organizational skills and ability for multi-tasking. Must be able to complete required reports with accuracy and meet prescribed deadlines. Must be innovative in problem solving, communicate well and be able to supervise clinical staff to manage effectively with available resources. Must be able to work without continuous supervision. Work is not completely standardized. Assignments are often received in the form of results expected, due dates and general procedures to follow.

Interrelationships: Responsible for supervising Central Sterilizing Technicians.
