Provide animal husbandry for nonhuman primate (NHP) buildings according to established protocols. Monitor health and assist veterinarian and supervisors. Administer rations and medications. Scope...... Participate within rhesus breeding program to provide quality care of animals and cleanliness of housing in NHP buildings.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Basic Animal Husbandry A. Completes thorough wash downs and disinfecting of animal housing in NHP buildings according to protocols and USDA regulations on a daily basis. B. Record relocation of animals assigned to NHP buildings daily. C. Feed animals a commercial feed, produce, and enrichment diet daily.
2. Facilities / Equipment Maintenance A. Maintain rat control and logs for all buildings and grounds when needed. B. Daily maintenance of vehicles and prepare monthly reports for vehicle use. C. Sanitize NHP buildings according to protocols and USDA regulations biweekly.
3. Animal Health Care A. Reports injuries and diseased conditions of animals to veterinarian or supervisor daily. B. Performs animal health checks by 8:00am and 1:30pm daily. C. Administer medications as directed by veterinarian daily. D. Administer rations and prepare fruit, feed, and special diets for colony animals on a daily basis. E. Provide daily nursery care for infants in incubators or ICU units. F. Keep grounds neat and put away equipment after use and sanitize daily. G. Assist Animal Resources Technologist, supervisor, and veterinarian with clinical activities as needed.
EDUCATION Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE Required: One year of animal experience in an animal hospital/clinic or animal research facility.
CERTIFICATION Required: None. Preferred: AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification within one year of appointment.
ACCURACY Required: Close attention to the preparation of medications, disinfectants, and insecticides. Maintenance of proper identity of laboratory animals and cleaning records.
WORKING CONDITIONS Usual: Outside facility. Protective clothing furnished. Direct contact with a variety of animals with the possibility of animal bites and scratches. Lifting/moving 50-100 pound items. Possible handling of potential exposure to animals or associated materials that have been exposed to biohazardous agents such as carcinogens, radioactive substances, or infectious organisms. Special: Weekend and holiday duty on a rotational basis.
1 Senior Animal Attendant must visually observe animals.
2 Must physically be able to walk in building wearing proper attire, according to protocols.
3 Must physically be able to lift 50-100 lbs. and be able to move equipment manually.
4 Must manually be able to restrain an infant or sedated animal.
5 Must be able to subtract, divide, add, and multiply to make proper dilutions needed.
