The Senior Technical Systems Specialist is a team player that is accomplishment oriented and able to utilise their technical knowledge to design and deploy system solutions that meet the requirements of both the operational business and application development teams.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Ensures all system administration functions are performed within established procedures and guidelines for system security and information confidentiality.
* Providing technical support and troubleshooting of equipment that is contained within the data centre or otherwise; this includes server hardware, SAN/NAS/DAS components, operating system, networking.
* Responsible for the system administration function on all servers and storage systems including provisions for high availability, optimal performance, capacity utilization and monitoring, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, and data warehousing.
* Responsible for installation, fine tuning, upgrading of infrastructure components such as SAN/NAS/DAS, servers, appliances, VMWare hosts etc - including fibre cabling.
* Provides mentorship and supervision to technical support and operational staff in respect to configuration and operational administration of data processing and storage systems.
* Creates, develops and assist with Disaster Recovery Planning and Business Continuity planning and testing;
* Responsible for maintaining expert level knowledge and awareness of technological innovation and trends.
* Demonstrates technology leadership to keep abreast of innovations and service developments.
* Within the Information Technology department, is the ultimate subject matter expert for systems administration including problem determination and resolution. Advises the Manager, Technical Services and the Director, IT Infrastructure on system administration issues, including core technical support processes, standard operating procedures, technical standards, and functional performance.
* Actively involved in departmental tactical planning and project management with respect to reviewing and evaluating technical innovation and the impact it will have on the Hospital.
* Completes assessments, analysis, and makes recommendations regarding the Hospital´s adoption of specific hardware or software solutions.
* Participation in the RFP, RFQ and RFI process to select the best vendor and technologies.
* Reviews, updates or develops documentation, policies and procedures.
* At times, may be responsible for the formulation and promulgation of relevant user communications with any system or procedural implementation or change.
* Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* A minimum of an undergraduate degree and/or diploma in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering is required
* A graduate degree with an emphasis on Engineering, Computer Science or Mathematics is preferred.
* 7 to 10 years experience in the IT industry is required.
* In-depth knowledge of systems programming, networking, communications, and data storage hardware and practices.
* Knowledge of the following operating systems is required: Microsoft Server, AIX, and Linux.
* Professional certification such as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), VMWare Certified Professional (VCP) is required.
* Candidate should possess and demonstrate knowledge and experience with AIX, Oracle on Power 5, Power7 systems and Power Blades.
* Candidate should possess deep knowledge of SAN equipment on the following platforms McData, Brocade, IBM, Hitachi etc., familiarity with Network Attached Storage (NAS). Demonstrated knowledge of HA systems, tools and solutions.
* Experience with Power Virtualization and VMware is desired.
* High level of initiative and self-direction.
* Ability to gather data, compile information and create reports for management.
* Demonstrated leadership and commitment to continuous professional learning
* Project Management experience an asset
* Must possess strong written and verbal communications skills and employ highly organized and systematic work habits.
* Must be able to take control of complex projects, with demonstrated superior initiative, and creative thinking.
* Must have the ability to multi-task with a high degree of focus and provide assistance, leadership, and mentoring to clients and other team members while remaining focused on assigned initiatives.
* Must have the ability to function within a 7/24 environment and participate in an on-call service and carry a mobile device.
