Baxter's BioScience division is a leading producer of both plasma-based and recombinant clotting factors for hemophilia, as well as biopharmaceuticals used to treat immune deficiencies, alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency and other blood-related disorders. Baxter also produces vaccines for the prevention of infectious diseases, as well as biosurgery products used for hemostasis and tissue-sealing in surgery. The Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL) within Baxter services as the primary field-based scientific expert. Senior MSLs are highly educated, clinically trained, experienced professionals who deliver reactive, cutting edge research support and technical/practical education to Health Care Professionals (HCP). Senior MSLs establish and maintain clinical/scientific relationships with medical professionals researchers, coordinators and other members of the scientific community in alignment with the therapeutic area (TA) focus. In addition, Senior MSLs identify and communicate information on key areas of research and scientific intelligence to internal stakeholders in their assigned areas. They participate in ongoing training through independent study, attendance at medical congresses, and training sessions provided by clinical and medical colleagues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Identify, establish, and maintain scientific relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs).
•Work with KOLs to identify topics, in alignment with TA scientific focus, that are of interest to the medical community.
•Act as primary liaison to investigators interested in developing and performing investigator driven research proposals which support strategically aligned objectives captured in TA plans.
•Present approved scientific data to HCPs in both group and one-on-one settings in accordance with company policies, applicable laws, regulations and ethical standards.
•Support the clinical operations organization, as needed, with Baxter sponsored clinical trials.
•Document and forward reports of adverse events according to Baxter's policy to ensure the safe and effective use of Baxter BioScience products.
•Identify and communicate new scientific findings and opportunities or threats that could impact the product portfolio
•Contribute to the development and feedback on literature searches, slide kits, and scientific presentations to various external customers in alignment with TA strategic plans.
•Provide scientific support in the development of clinical publications as guided by TA strategic publication plans.
•Attend and provide scientific support at R&D exhibits and scientific sessions at regional, national, and international medical conferences. Organize and chair roundtable meetings as needed.
•Actively participate in advisory boards and clinical investigator meetings per TA needs.
•Maintain scientific and medical expertise within assigned therapeutic area through ongoing independent learning.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
This job requires skills in leadership, analytical thinking, interpersonal relationships, focused planning, oral and written communication, and effective collaboration. The candidate will exhibit the ability to think innovatively and strategically, manage oneself effectively in a fast paced, challenging environment, and remain focused on achieving team objectives. This job also requires the ability to develop and maintain strong strategic alliances with key opinion leaders, business partners, and colleagues in a professional manner. Candidate must be able to travel up to 75% (3-4 days a week), as needed.
Education and/or Experience:
•An advanced degree (e.g. M.D, Pharm.D., or Ph.D.) in a relevant science area is required. Preference will be given to those with a background in immunology, however other relevant backgrounds will also be considered.
•5+ years in a clinical/pharmaceutical setting preferred
•Relevant residency, fellowship, research, or other clinical experience (particularly in immunology) is strongly desired
•3+ years of prior Medical Science Liaison experience preferred
•Possess a good understanding of FDA and OIG guidelines
•Possess a thorough understanding of the drug development and approval process
•Possess an understanding of clinical trials and investigator-initiated trial processes
•Above average computer skills for presentations and word-processing related activities (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
