Minimum Skills/Requirements

Two to three years college level courses/Associate's Degree/Diploma in Nursing. Current New Mexico License required. Less than one year experience in all areas of acute, medical, surgical, and pediatric nursing. Unit specific nursing care experience preferred.
Primary Job Functions

. Acts as clinical resource by overseeing the delivery of patient care, directs and delegates patient care assignments to nursing staff working on the floor, based on acuteness of patient care needs and staff capability and anticipates future needs.

. Maintains clinically competent in providing direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes a indicated to ensure optimal patient care. As charge nurse, will assume direct patient care responsibility compatible with individual unit needs.

. Coordinates patients' care through collaboration with the patient/family and other specialists of the healthcare team. Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.

. Assists physicians with various procedures, treatments, surgical techniques or delegate/assign to other healthcare team members as appropriate. Administers medication and treatments as prescribed by physician, clinical path or standard protocols. Delegating or assigning aspects of care to healthcare team members consistent with their role and responsibilities.

. Effectively communicates with and assists other members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines. Actively participates in problem-solving and conflict resolution to maintain team cohesiveness. Supports and maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

. Role models professional growth and development through participating in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops. Participates and maintains awareness of ongoing self-management activities and assists with the implementation of the changes as recommended by the committees. Assists in orientation of new staff or students and serves as a resource person. Professionally responsible for current nursing research, current protocols or procedures, hospital philosophy, and hospital programs in order to maintain quality.

. Knowledgeable and participates in planning the unit budget and assures quality patient care is delivered in a cost effective manner.

. Demonstrates the knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span from neonates to geriatrics. The RN must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide care needed by these patient groups. Remains sensitive to spiritual and specific cultural needs, recognizes them and incorporates values into plan of care.
