This position has access to and knowledge of extremely sensitive, private and confidential materials. Ability to maintain the highest standard is required with zero tolerance.
All the primary duties within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and the Medical Center.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:



1. Performs physiological, educational and psychosocial assessments while applying effective interviewing skills to elicit information from the patient and/or significant other that is necessary to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in accordance with unit standards.
2. Understands the application and interpretation of normal and abnormal diagnostic data and incorporates it into written assessment.
3. Collaborates with the patient and/or significant other and health care team members to plan for discharge.
4. Establishes priorities and implements nursing actions through direct patient care and/or through delegation of responsibility.
5. Safely performs and documents nursing interventions consistent with unit nursing care standards.
6. Utilizes data from the patient and/or significant others and collaborates with other health care team members on patient care.
7. Demonstrates the ability to calculate and administer all types of medications via various routes accurately and safely for all patients served.
8. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skills to provide age-specific care to the patients served on the assigned units. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
9. Understands, performs and practices according to the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
10. Demonstrates the ability to triage patients in a timely manner and prioritize patient care based on initial assessment and pertinent medical history.
11. Transfers patients according to COBRA/EMTALA regulations and ensures accurate documentation according to department policy of same.
12. Discharges patients assuring:
a) appropriate referrals for follow-up care
b) understanding of instructions in the use of prescribed medications and treatments
c) appropriate documentation of patient's response to discharge education
13. Demonstrate appropriate use of defibrillation/cardio version equipment and appropriate care of the patient.
14. Demonstrates the ability to assist with the insertion of an external/temporary pacemaker and the appropriate care of the patient.
15. Demonstrates a clear understanding of critical care drug therapies including indications for usage, standard concentrations, untoward effects, etc.
16. Demonstrates the ability to identify and interpret various life-threatening dysrhythmias and their appropriate interventions.
17. Demonstrates the ability to perform an initial assessment of the pediatric patient utilizing knowledge of age appropriate differences in body systems.
18. Demonstrates the ability to perform an assessment of parent/child interaction including recognition of abuse or neglect.
19. Demonstrates a clear understanding of various commonly used pediatric medications including indications for use, dosage, untoward effects, etc.
20. Maintains a familiarity with both the adult and pediatric crash carts.
21. Demonstrates an understanding of the effects of common illicit and prescribed drugs and the appropriate interventions.
22. Demonstrates proficiency in the identification of patients with acute intoxication or those who are experiencing DTs or severe withdrawal.
23. Demonstrates the ability to perform immediate assessments of trauma patients and implement appropriate emergency interventions within the Registered Nurse's scope of practice.
24. Demonstrates self-directing learning and participation in continuing education to maintain current competency and respond to clinical demands. Attends at least 15 hours of continuing education each year.


ESSENTIAL JOB SPECIFICATIONS:



1. Education: Graduate from a State Board of Nursing NLN accreditedSchoolofNursingwith a current licensure as a registered Nurse by the Board of Nursing or compact state.
2. Licensure/Certificate: BCLS required ACLS and PALS preferred. CEN encouraged.
3. Experience: One year Medical-Surgical experience preferred, but not required. A minimum of two years critical care experience preferred. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age specific care to the patients served in assigned units.
4. Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication skills required to effectively express facts, ideas and views when communicating to all with whom he/she comes in contact. Must be able to focus in the middle of chaos, as well as change priorities as emergencies arise.
5. Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Must be able to maneuver self and equipment with ease. Required to pass competencies on all patient care equipment.
6. Essential Physical Requirements: This position requires a considerable amount of physical work. Trips to various departments will be required. Lifting up to 50 pounds.
7. Essential Mental Abilities: Must be able to analyze, interpret and compile data.
8. Essential Sensory Requirements: Must be free of deficits in vision, hearing, speech that would impede ability to perform duties and care.
9. Exposure to Hazards: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in air-conditioned environment with exposure to noise. There is protection from environment conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. (This position does have minimal exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleaning agents. This position requires high exposure to infectious wastes such as blood and body fluids that mandate the wearing of gloves, gowns, and goggles for every actual or potential exposure).
