Phlebotomist Category: Patient Care Support & LPN Facility: Winter Haven Hospital Department: Phlebotomy Schedule: PRN (As Needed) Shift: Varied Shifts Hours: Varied Job Details: High School/GED Job Summary: Under direct supervision and according to established procedures, collects blood from patients age neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric, by syringe, vacuum Y, or by skin puncture for micro-specimens and delivers to the proper laboratory sections for testing, communicating daily with patients, physicians, and other hospital employees, maintaining an attitude of quality patient care with the realization that errors may have serious consequences for patients. Performs EKG's and on an as needed basis, responds to Nursing Homes/Homebound/Health Fair responsibilities in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures. Responds to patient incidents, completes proper paperwork, and follows through to the Sr. Phlebotomist. Responsible for promptly answering pages in response to requests from the various nursing floors and/or phlebotomy supervisory staff to draw patient specimens.
Knowledge & Skills Required: Basic computer skills necessary to work with LIS Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare workers Knowledge of blood collection techniques for patient populations and general clinical laboratory terminology
Education & Experience Required: Completion of a structured phlebotomy, laboratory, medical assistant training program to include phlebotomy or minimum of six months of pertinent job experience
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration Required: Current Healthcare Provider (CPR) certification
Physical Demands for Essential Functions of the Job: Ability to be fit tested for use of a certified respiratory mask in performing procedures in isolation rooms Ability to bend over patients, lift, carry, and manipulate Phlebotomy supplies and equipment to a maximum of 25 pounds Ability to walk long distances Audio and visual acuity, color discrimination, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary to perform testing procedures and instrument maintenance and trouble-shooting
