Job Objective:
Under the direction of the Transport Manager, provides transportation to patients throughout the hospital as needed, and other special tasks to maintain department functions. Will perform duties and functions relating to receiving, storage and distribution of all patient medications and supplies.
Essential Duties:
* Knowledge and use of proper body mechanics
* Assists patients in and out of bed using proper patient care and lifting techniques
* Uses wheelchair, gurneys, and other similar mechanisms appropriate to patient needs and safe practice
* Communicates effectively with hospital staff prior to moving patients
* Assesses the patients needs prior and during transport
* Determines if an emergency situation exists and provides special care for the patient according to established protocols
* Follows through with task or special projects with sound judgment
* Understands special equipment used with patients when transporting the patient and equipment
* Reports defective wheelchairs, gurneys, and other similar mechanisms to responsible party
* Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups
* Participates in age specific education and training program
* Demonstrates proficiency in required age specific competencies
* Distributes medications and patient supplies to designated areas on a routine basis and as assigned
* Receives medication and supplies from vendor and places into inventory
* Forwards packing list and invoice to pharmacy purchaser
* Follows established department procedures to accurately verify and transport the proper patient by visually checking patient identification or verifying with nursing staff
* Transports patients, chart, specimen, and required equipment to various treatment and diagnostic area throughout the hospital in a safe and efficient manner 100% of the time
* Provides emergency assistance to patients who become ill during the transport process until proper staff can be notified and assistance arrives
* Reports to nursing units and notifies nursing staff of patient being transported and destination
* Verifies mode of transportation and pre-op status. Obtains patient chart, necessary paperwork, required linen, and/or equipment
* Initiates or assists in transfer process from bed to mode of transportation. Requests and obtains instruction/assistance from nursing staff for patients that require isolation techniques, two-man lifts, bed pan/restroom assistance, or that have support devices requiring special handling
* Safely and effectively uses all equipment necessary to carry out duties

* Ability to maintain the confidentiality of patient, hospital and department information
* Ability to adhere to safety and regulation
* Ability to interpret and function under hospital and department policies and procedures
* Conforms to required and appropriate JCAHO requirements
* Conforms with and supports hospital quality assurance and improvement guidelines
* Ability to participate effectively in department and hospital staff education
* Display a willingness to work as a team player
* Ability to give and support the highest level of patient/customer satisfaction at all times
* Supports and adheres to the values and mission statement established by the AVH Board of Directors
* Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Corporate Compliance rules and regulations, complies with duty to report behavior standard, demonstrates understanding of purpose for Corporate Compliance hotline, and importance of seeking guidance from a supervisor when in doubt regarding a possible Corporate Compliance issue
* Ability and willingness to assume additional departmental responsibilities such as:
* Orientation and on-the-job training of new personnel
* Monitoring on-going quality control measures within the department
* Ability to read and write at a level generally achieved by high school graduation or equivalent
Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
* CPR training within 30 days of hire date.
