JOB DESCRIPTION:
PCU-Highland Unit description PCU: The Progressive Care Unit at the Highland campus is a challenging and exciting environment that may appeal to the critical care nurse or to a nurse who may be interested in a fast-paced acute care area. Progressive care is a term that the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) uses to collectively describe areas that are also referred to as Intermediate care, Stepdown and Telemetry units. AACN recognizes progressive care units as part of the critical care continuum. Progressive care defines care that is delivered to patients whose needs fall along the less acute end of that continuum. However, this may not always be accurate. Progressive care patients are moderately stable with less complexity, require more non-invasive monitoring, and require intermittent nursing vigilance or are stable with a high potential to become unstable and will require a higher level of nursing care and vigilance. Patients have a decreased risk of life-threatening events, a decreased need for invasive physiological monitoring, increased stability, and an increased ability to become an active participant in their care. Nurses who work in a progressive care unit have the same educational needs as those who work in the ICU. Critical thinking, clinical judgment, assessment skills, advocacy, caring, collaboration, response to diversity and clinical inquiry are characteristics of the Progressive Care nurse. Our nurse-to-patient ratio of 3 - 5:1 facilitates the nurses' ability to care for this specialized group of patient s. Nurses undergo a comprehensive orientation process with exposure to the ICU and the Cardiac Cath Lab facilitated by the Critical Care Clinical Educator. The Progressive Care Unit is a collaborative environment with staff involved in many aspects of daily operation, strategic planning, and education. Participation is encouraged at every level. We are seeking dedicated nurses who would like to practice in a "nurse friendly" environment, feel valued, and join us on a journey to seeking Magnet status.
