Summary
The Nursing Education Specialist is an advanced practice nurse who provides leadership and works in partnership with nursing, the health care team and system leaders to develop a quality practice setting that supports professional nursing practice and quality patient care. This is accomplished through the principle duties and responsibilities outlined below. People: Functions as an expert resource and consultant to management and staff on nursing, education and professional practice. Works collaboratively and provides leadership to nurses and multidisciplinary teams to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of care delivery systems. Service: Anticipates and exceeds patients and customers' expectations that meet all elements of the Henry Ford Experience. Quality and Safety: Performs project management work of a complex nature to improve practice and quality of care. May include: developing and refining project objectives and work plan, guiding activities of project team, facilitating and/or leading meetings and teams, providing periodic updates to administration, preparing reports and coordinating/providing written and verbal presentations. Designs and implements program evaluation methods to elicit results useful in development of new programs or revisions of current programs. Analyses data for future comparisons and improvements. Growth: Acts as a facilitator and coach, working with colleagues in nursing and other disciplines to promote team building, positive change and the fulfillment of the HFHS mission. Promotes professional development of self through formal and informal educational opportunities. Clearly demonstrates goal-directed, accountable behaviors regarding self. Offers consultation/assistance to colleagues in conduct of research and scholarship. Contributes to the development of the body of knowledge of the art and science of nursing. Supports HFHS system goals and initiatives through active involvement in implementation of strategic plans. Research and Education: Identifies educational/developmental needs of HFHS Nursing and Patient Care Services using formal and informal assessment methods. Designs educational structures, programs, courses and tools that prepare and support the Registered Nurse and unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) to meet standards of care for the HFHS. Utilizes current research and evidenced-based practice in the design and development and adapts/revises to address changes in health care and regulatory requirements. Plans and implements core and specialty programs and/or resources that support professional nursing practice such as orientation, preceptorship, continuing education activities and competencies using adult learning principles. Community: Represents Nursing Development & Research on committees and councils. Finance: Aware of financial implications of educational offerings such as the use or saving of time and personnel hours, plans and implements educational offerings in a way that benefits both the learner and HFHS. Throughout the course of the design and implementation of educational programs and processes is aware of the financial implications of the educational programs presented because of their influence on the practice of nursing.
Education
Masters Degree in Nursing (MSN) from accredited institution required; Certification in area of specialty preferred; Current Michigan RN licensure required. Minimum five years clinical experience and two years of teaching experience in a university or college and/or hospital/health care institution. Competence in curriculum or program design, development and evaluation. Effective interpersonal skills, problem solving and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to inspire commitment and to energize people to achieve mutual goals. Must be self directed and able to work independently. Ability to integrate knowledge of cultural diversity into role. Possesses broad knowledge of health care systems, trends, and the care continuum. Communicates effectively orally, in writing and through technology. Considerable amounts of computer work. Computer skills including Microsoft Software (Word, PowerPoint) and familiar with use of Internet.
