Job Summary:

The Employee Health RN establishes, manages and evaluates comprehensive health services to hospital employees. These services are provided through a collaborative process, which assesses, plans, implements, coordinates and monitors employee health and safety.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assesses employees who report work-related injuries and refer to appropriate health care provider if medical treatment is needed. Interview injured workers and report all claims for workers compensation benefits to Third Party Administrator. Review employee injury treatment. Generate reports to the Safety Office and Safety Committee for review if concerns arise from accident. May assist with accident investigation as needed or requested. Supervises Workers Compensation Coordinator.
  • Perform skin tests and immunization to employees, volunteers, doctors and contract employees as required by law and the Hospital infection control committee. Report statistics of surveillance and compliance rates to IC Committee, Safety Committee, department managers and Human Resources.
  • Ensures adherence to local, state and federal regulatory preventative health measures, e.g. blood borne pathogen, county tuberculosis screening requirements, and OSHA surveillance requirements.
  • Develop and implement health promotion and/or disease prevention programs such as yearly onsite influenza vaccination, respirator fit testing and annual required education for identified employees.
  • Responsible for storage and maintenance of confidential employee health records.
  • Evaluates employees for return-to-work clearance following three (3) or more days of absence.
  • Coordinates with Infection Control in developing and updating policies, procedures, standards and objectives.
  • Actively seeks and implements methods to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care and the service provided, using knowledge gained through the occurrence reporting system.
  • Ensures staff is informed at least on a quarterly basis regarding the trends in occurrences as they pertain to patient safety in the unit.
  • Continually educates the staff on the established guidelines for reporting significant medical errors or unanticipated outcomes in the patient's care that can result in patient harm.
  • Attends in-service presentations and completes the mandatory education including but not limited to: infection control, patient safety, quality improvement, MSDS and OSHA standards (PPE, First Aide and Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communications, Emergency Procedures and Job Safety).
  • Includes patient safety in the departments Performance Improvement Plan.

 

Requirements:

         Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally required through completion of BS in Nursing; Extensive nursing experience of six to eight years with current experience in Occupational Medicine will suffice for a BS degree

         Maintains knowledge of current standards and laws affecting employee health and safety by reading professional books, journals and other literature and by participating in professional organizations

         Current California Registered Nurse license

         Current BCLS certification

         Current knowledge of County, State and Federal standards and laws governing Occupational Medicine and Employee Health standards of practice and ability to interpret them to employees, management and staff

         Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with patients, employee, staff and physicians

         Ability to use teaching skills necessary in order to evaluate diverse problems and situations and implement, or direct appropriate solutions and resolutions

         Ability to use teaching skills necessary to support employee and staff learning and information skills

         Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) credential recommended

         Ability to function effectively and efficiently in highly technical and occasionally stressful situations. Ability to walk and stand for up to fifty percent work time and occasionally lifts 15-25 lbs.
