NEONATAL CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST - INTENSIVE CARE NURSERY Requisition Number 400369558 Auto req ID 28445BR Location Durham Duke Entity DUKE HOSPITAL Department Name ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE Shift First/Day Full Time / Part Time FULL TIME Job Description Position Summary The Duke Neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist collaborates with members of the health care team to enhance patient care by developing and supporting nursing staff and coordinating care for a select group of complex high risk neonatal patients along the continuum. S/he is a clinician, educator, investigator, consultant, role model and leader. S/he makes clinical judgments based upon a synthesis of current research, concepts, principles, theories, and outcomes to solve complex problems. The CNS is a dynamic and positive role model for nursing staff. S/he functions as an integral part of a larger interdisciplinary team contributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and in providing leadership to the nursing staff and to the organization. Position Requirements Position requires current North Carolina Registered Nursing Licensure. Master's of Nursing required. Minimum five years of nursing experience; at least two in neonatal. Excellent teaching, verbal, and written communication skills are essential. Must be self directed and motivated. High ethical standards and professional role model required. AACN Neonatal CNS certification or the ability to sit for certification is highly desirable. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) required. Hours Primary hours will be Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, and other hours as needed to support the work of the neonatal intensive care nursing staff and patient population. Responsible to Director and Assistant Director of Advanced Clinical Practice for Duke University Hospital, ACP Team Leader, and the Clinical Operations Director for the Intensive Care Nursery. Position works closely with ICN Physician faculty and the Neonatal Nurse Practitioners. Specific Job Responsibilities and Standards Clinical Expert * Provide evidence-based expertise in neonatal nursing care to maximize clinical outcomes for the patient and family. * Assess current state of nursing knowledge and expertise related to the provision of evidence-based neonatal care, and help structure appropriate educational opportunities to promote professional development of Intensive Care Nursery nurses along the continuum from novice to the expert. * Serve as a resource and professional role model to nursing staff and leadership. * Collaborate with nursing staff to assess, diagnose, plan, identify priorities and realistic outcomes, and evaluate the effectiveness and cost efficiency of patient care. * Coordinate clinical practice and/or clinical program services to maximize patient outcomes and to accomplish the strategic objectives of the Intensive Care Nursery and of the organization. * Teach, support, coach and mentor nursing staff and healthcare learners to promote evidence-based clinical practice, knowledge, skills and professional development related to evidence-based neonatal nursing care Educator * Facilitate the professional development of nursing staff by improving clinical and theoretical education and knowledge * Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and provide expert coaching and guidance through both formal and informal one-on-one teaching with nursing staff. * Support nursing staff retention through on-going and clinically/professionally relevant educational programming. * Provide leadership to nursing staff in the development of patient education standards and protocols * Help coordinate and provide clinical experience in a preceptor role for nursing students attending institutions that have contractual agreements with DUHS. Research Utilization and Investigation * Incorporate clinical research into clinical, educational and consultative roles in order to provide a scientific basis for professional nursing practice * Provide support for nursing research in the Intensive Care Nursery. * Provide leadership in interdisciplinary performance improvement and clinical research to promote evidence-based nursing practice and to improve clinical outcomes. * Mentor Intensive Care Nursery nurses in the development, and evaluation of standards of practice, guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols for the Intensive Care Nursery. Consultant * Serve as a consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare community, and to the larger community in areas of professional practice and high risk neonatal care. * Design, implement and evaluate programs and projects to facilitate Intensive Care Nursery initiatives, and institutional goals and objectives. * Support accreditation, program certification and regulatory activities as related to the neonatal patient population and the Intensive Care Nursery units. Professional Leadership and Development * Role model advanced practice professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills * Assist and support Intensive Care Nursery nursing staff in professional development and attainment of practice norms. Minimum Qualifications Education Work requires completion of a Master's degree in Nursing. Experience Work requires one year of nursing experience beyond the Master's degree. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Degrees, Licensures, Certifications State of North Carolina licensure is also required. Index Monitor
