MENTAL HEALTH WORKER PER DIEM (UNION)
Job Description SUMMARY The Mental Health Aide will provide routine patient care in accordance with established methods, recognized standards, and our established policies and procedures at NSMC Union Hospital. He/she is directed in the performance of these duties by the Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse who will monitor and evaluate the Mental Health Aide¿s performance to assure quality patient care. PRIMARY RESPONIBILITIES 1. Provides behavioral interventions to manage patients as needed. 2. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to deploy less restrictive alternatives in managing agitated patients. 3. Participates in patient restraints as directed by a licensed nurse. 4. Assists group programming by escorting patients to groups as needed. May run groups as assigned. 5. Verifies the identification of patients by checking the name bracelet for date of birth and name before care or serving food. 6. Makes beds occupied and unoccupied. Makes blankets and other linen accessible to patients. 7. Maintains a clean and uncluttered environment in patient unit, bedside table, closet, and personal care items. Keeps supply room and/or utility rooms clean. 8. Cleans commode and/or bedpans after each use. 9. Reports any deviation in patient condition or change from usual to Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse. 10. Assists patients to be as independent as possible. 11. Cleans patient care equipment after use. 12. Follows infection control procedures as directed. 13. Reports injuries or accidents as they occur. 14. Keeps patients care area free from hazards and obstacles. 15. Maintains a neat and clean appearance conductive to patient care. 16. Abides by all facility policies and procedures including but not limited to personnel, safety, unit specific and nursing department policies. 17. Assures that work/assignments areas are clean and equipment and supplies are stored before leaving care areas on breaks, and at the end of the shift. 18. Performs other related duties as necessary and as are directed by the Charge Nurse, Unit Director or Nurse Manager. 19. Attends in-service sessions for Nursing Assistants. 20. Knows limitations and seeks guidance and direction when necessary. 21. Assists RN with body and belongings search. Removes and safely stores all sharps. 22. Documents belongings on designated belonging sheet. Stores belongings and valuables in storage. 23. Return of all belongings and valuables and documents return of items in collaboration with RNs. 24. Assists patients to meet basic hygiene needs, i.e. partial and complete bath/shower, routine skin and mouth care, denture care, incontinent care, shampoos, shaving, etc. Dresses patients neatly, in their own clothing and assists with other ADL activities. Keeps incontinent patients clean and dry at all times by bathing and changing bed linen as necessary. 25. Assists patients in walking and in transportation to other department activities. Assists patients with meals including giving correct tray, cutting food, feeding as necessary, supervising in dining room, performs after meal care. 26. Assures that patient food is accessible and self-help devices are available. Serves extra nourishments as directed. 27. Records patient food and fluid intake as directed. 28. Assists patients to and from bathroom, as needed or as scheduled per bowel and bladder program, and offers bed rest/bed bound patients bed pan and/or urinal. Reports and documents bowel movements as directed. 29. Places patients in correct and comfortable positions. 30. Changes position of patient in bed or chair every two hours at a minimum and documents accordingly. 31. Answers call lights promptly. 32. Washes hands before and after caring for each patient. 33. Charts required information as instructed. Qualifications SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: CPI training is required within 30 days of hire. Must be able to receive and understand oral instruction, preferably in the English language. Must be sixteen years old or older. Must be able to function under direction, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients, other members of the Health Care Team, facility personnel, and families/supportive others. EDUCATION REQUIRED High School diploma or G.E.D. Certification as a nursing assistant in the state of Massachusetts. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS and/or REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED. Must be a graduate of an appropriate training program. C.N.A. Certification in the state of Massachusetts required. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Experience with psychiatric patients preferred.
