Job Description: The Laboratory Technical Consultant performs laboratory testing procedures and provides clinical result interpretation according to established procedures, ensuring quality standards are met.

The Technical Consultant performs tests in compliance with established departmental standards. The Consultant reviews and verifies results to ensure data validity and interprets results. This position applies appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling, instrument operation, operator maintenance, application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring. The Consultant also participates in the evaluation of new equipment and troubleshoots equipment problems as needed.

The Technical Consultant performs and documents quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards. This position works with the Laboratory Supervisor to resolve quality control, patient or procedural problems and recommends enhancements to laboratory procedures.

This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Lab Tech Consultant I Clinical Lab: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemical, physical or biological sciences or related field acceptable to the certifying agency (ASCP), required.
Lab Tech Consultant II Anatomic Pathology: Associates degree in histotechnology, medical technology, chemical, physical or biological sciences or related field acceptable to the certifying agency (ASCP) or certificate of completion in an accredited program related to histotechnology accepted by the certifying agency (ASCP), required. Bachelor's degree in the above requirements preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Registry or registry eligible Medical Technologist, Histotechnologist. Requires participation in 12 CEUs annually.
EXPERIENCE: Prior experience preferred, but not required. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrates the ability to perform the department specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must have the ability to distinguish colors.
Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting up to 20lbs.

Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): All diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.
