Medical Prescriber - Dubuque/Maquoketa Status: Exempt Purpose: To provide direct clinical services to Mental Health Center clients including exams/assessments, medication management lab test follow up and the overall clinical coordination of services. Qualifications: Graduate of an approved School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Program or Medical School and licensed in the state of Iowa with Mental Health Certification. Reportability: Reports to and is directly accountable to the Lead Therapist with assistance from the Director of Clinical Services. Scope: This position has impact on the other members of the Mental Health Center staff and all clinic clients. Skills: Must have the theoretical knowledge and skills involved in the delivery of mental health care services including skills in performing assessments, physical exams, lab tests and the interpretation of these. This person must also possess the knowledge of concepts for mental health delivery, including medication management. Personal and professional skills relating to clients and to other professionals are essential. The knowledge and skills involved in writing and maintaining protocols are necessary. Respect for confidentiality of clients is mandatory. Relationships: Represents the agency in various groups related to health care in the community. Principle Responsibilities: 1. Delivers mental health care services to clients. a. Perform intake assessments. b. Provide medication management, including periodic medication checks. c. Institute referrals as necessary. d. Review all abnormal lab reports and oversee nursing staff in the education and follow up of clients. 2. Documents care provided within 48 hours of date of service as required. 3. Maintains relationship with the Medical Director as required. a. Maintain protocols in written form, reviewing, revising every protocol as needed, at least every three years. b. Review all cases referred to physicians. c. Meet with the Medical Director on as needed basis related to specific cases. d. Be available during Medical Director's visit to Center. 4. To represent the program and the agency in activities extending beyond the clinic. a. Present educational sessions to groups as indicated by professional ability. b. Participate in public relations projects. c. Share information and resources to assist other programs in helping clients meet needs related to health care. d. Establish professional network within the community. e. Preceptor for interns as directed. 5. Provide quality assurance for health clinic. a. Review medical files as needed. b. Identify issues of quality related to health services to the clients. c. Offer suggestions for improving care given to clients. d. Participate in staff meetings. 6. Perform other tasks as assigned. Physical Requirements: 10% of time spent standing, 5% of time spent walking and 85% of time spent sitting. Must be able to lift 10 pounds. Must have average hearing and visual acuity. Is required to use a phone and have average manual dexterity. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner license in Iowa is required with mental health certification.
