The Infection Control Specialist is responsible for the ongoing planning, implementation, and coordination of the Infection Control program for the Medical Center. This individual, by virtue of education and experience, is sanctioned by the governing body to be recognized as the authority in Infection Control policy, procedure, and practice for the organization. The Infection Control Specialist shares this authority with the Chairperson of the Infection Control Committee. The ICP is accountable for the program to ensure the continued surveillance, prevention and control of infection.
1. Surveillance, Prevention and Control of Infection
a) Designs and implements an infection control process that is appropriate to the organization's demographics. Process includes strategies to decrease the risk of endemic and epidemic nosocomial infection in patients and health care workers.
b) Annual appraisal and revision of the Infection Control Plan in compliance with the requirements of the Standards for Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of Infection by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and healthcare organizations.
c) Selects and utilizes a surveillance approach in accordance with epidemiological principles and infectious disease. Such an approach considers hospital-specific demographics, such as, scope of service; high volume; frequent infectious complications; high potential for adverse patient outcome; or substantial potential for prevention.
d) Designs and implements a data-collection methodology that is relevant, valid, and capable of providing statistically-based analysis of infection control-related data, including incidence and prevalence rates.
2. Education/In-Service Training
a) Provides for the planning and implementation of education regarding the surveillance, prevention, and control of infection for medical center personnel.
b) Participates in the ongoing education of medical center personnel at time of orientation, annual retraining, and as necessary to prevent infection and promote principles of infection control.
c) Pursues Pursues for ongoing education in order to remain current in the literature and strategies of epidemiology and infection control.
d) Provides an ongoing assessment of the needs of the organization related to infection control practices and infectious diseases. Works with the Education Department to provide education and training to meet the needs of the organization.
3. Communication
a) Coordinates the operations and functions of the Infection Control Committee and acts as a co-chair of the committee.
b) Demonstrates accountability for timely completion and accuracy of minutes, meeting agendas, correspondence, and referrals.
c) Prepares accurate and relevant quarterly reports for hospital leadership to demonstrate departmental, organization and medical staff performance related to infection control. Includes trending, display, and management of data over time.
d) Supports the goals of the Environment of Care Plan as it relates to the integration of infection control practices with interim life safety, biomedical equipment, hazardous/biomedical waste, emergency preparedness, utility systems, security, and safety.
e) Provides integration and collaboration of the infection control program, including staff education, with the employee health program.
f) Ensures accurate and timely communication of infection control statistics and infection control issues to all members of the health care team.
4. Quality of Work

c) Demonstrates good judgment in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
d) Provides timely and appropriate communication to the director and consults/independently assumes responsibility for unassigned tasks.
e) Participates in departmental or organization CQI Teams to identify and improve performance related to infection control.
f) Active participant of medical center committees representing the goals of the Infection Control Plan.
g) Provides assistance to departments in complying with JCAHO standards related to Infection Control.
h) Acts as the function team leader of the JCAHO standards for Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of Infection.
Qualifications:
- Florida RN Licensure
- Minimum 2 years of hospital nursing experience.
- Experience in infection control and CIC certification preferred
