General Manager of Laboratory Operations - Life Science
Based in Chicago, Illinois (Northern suburb of Chicago in Lincolnshire, IL
Our client is a global leader in inspection and testing services with over 59,000 employees and 1000 offices and labs worldwide.
They provide outsourced laboratory services to pharma, biotech, medical device and cosmetic industries. Services to include: drug discovery for Phase I to IV clinical trials, biostatistical management, regulatory affairs, bioanalytical, quality testing in microbiology, analytical chemistry, biocompatitability, microbiology, sterility, method development and stability testing.
This new high-tech and cutting edge laboratory facility is based in the northern suburb of Chicago (Lincolnshire, IL). We are seeking a General Manager who will manage and oversee 5 direct reports and 75 lab employees.
Products tested include: pharmaceutical and biotechnical finished products, active pharmaceutical ingredients and medical devices in this facility. Analytical testing includes: USP, EP and customer methods for analytical stability and microbiological testing.
The Role: Reporting to the Vice President North America. You will be accountable for:
All aspects of lab day to day operations, financial P&L, performance and customer relations at this facility.
Overall operation of the pharmaceutical laboratory (accurate, timely, compliant, service and profitability) and ensuring services are preformed in compliance with cGMP, cGLP and other federal and local regulations.
Accountability for the delivery of product test data to achieve customer satisfaction and maintain productions and specified turnaround targets.
Monitor production of each department and ensures optimum staff levels to achieve standards of production, quality and financial performance and implementing improvements to ensure the laboratory achieves competitive advantage and profitability.
Report turnaround times in monthly reports, manages to goal of 100% on time delivery and manages supplies to achieve optimum production and cost effectiveness.
Monitor man-hours and approves overtime accordingly, adding additional staff where workload and financial performance can support it, monitors and reports weekly production status (# samples processed/personnel) and maintains production targets and takes proactive measures to sustain these targets.
Responsible for approvals and consumables management & timely ordering of supplies.
Develop new services/products and concepts for the assigned market segment.
Meet with customers to determine opportunities and technical requirements and promote the image, capability and integrity of the company to the clients.
Achieve and exceed key operational KPIs and maintain high quality standards.
Accountable for achieving the budget in terms of revenue and local contribution and monitor markets for the development of new trends and technologies to develop new services and offerings.
Ensure compliance with Health & Safety requirements.
May be assigned and coordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.
The Requirements:
University degree in a science related field ( Pharmaceutical, Chemistry, Life Science), with an advanced degree or MBA a plus.
10 + year experience in a supervisory / management/operational role in a laboratory environment.
Ability to realize business opportunities in conformity to business strategy.
Strong leadership skills and experience in the supervision of technical teams in a laboratory environment.
Proven time management skills, attention to detail with the ability to manage and coordinate teams and projects in a faced pace professional environment.
Capable of interacting with all levels of management, employees, supplier and clients.
Ability to realize business opportunities and knowledgeable of the US pharmaceutical marketplace.
Business minded, competitive and profit driven (P&L experience) with related technical know how and able to motivate a team towards a common goal.
Works well under pressure, proven time management skills and strong attention to detail.
