Decorah Clinic Mayo Health System seeks a full-time BC/BE Family Medicine physician (without OB) to provide a full range of medical services for a patient population of 72,000. Decorah Clinic Mayo Health System is a 17-physician group composed of 7 Family Medicine physicians, 2 Internal Medicine, 1 General Surgeon, 1 Orthopedic Surgeon, 1 Urologist, 1 Otolaryngologist and 1 Radiologist. Other clinical providers include a Behavioral Medicine Psychologist, Dietician, Audiologist and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. Additional visiting outreach specialists are also on staff in Adult and Pediatric Cardiology, Endocrinology, GI, Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, OB/GYN, Ophthalmology, Pulmonary Diseases and Rheumatology. Most services are provided by Mayo Clinic Rochester.
Qualifications: Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Family Medicine. Skills and experience in disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness, and critical care procedures. Decorah Clinic was established in 1953 as a solo family medicine practice. They joined Mayo Health System in 1992. Mayo Clinic and Franciscan Skemp physicians from fifteen different specialties travel to Decorah regularly providing local access to specialized evaluation and treatment.
A new facility, adjacent to the Winneshiek Medical Center, was constructed in 1994, tripling the space of the former building (39 exam rooms, a cast room, several procedure rooms, a business office and several waiting areas). Laboratory services are available within the Clinic, along with ECG, tympanogram, PFT and audiogram testing. There is a full-time, on-site administrator who supervises all non-clinical activities relieving physicians of many administrative duties.
Winneshiek Medical Center is a 55-bed, not-for-profit county hospital with 19 full-time physicians (13 Family Medicine, 2 General Surgeons, 2 Orthopedic Surgeons, 1 Radiologist and 1 Pathologist). Inpatient services include medical/surgery, OB, intensive coronary care and skilled care. Outpatient services include Mayo Dialysis Center-Decorah, emergency services, full service radiology, laboratory and pathology, ultrasound, physical therapy and sports medicine, cardiac evaluation and rehabilitation, same-day surgery, respiratory therapy and chemotherapy. There is a new 16-slice CT scanner allowing for sophisticated emergency, same-day surgery, pathology and radiology and a mobile MRI scanner with plans for a fixed MRI scanner soon.
New Partnership-Decorah Clinic Mayo Health System & Winneshiek Medical Center: Effective April 1, 2005, a new partnership was formed between Decorah Clinic-Mayo Health System and Winneshiek Medical Center. This partnership improves local health care through full integration of the medical center and clinic and allows more coordinated care for patients, allows for better patient access to physicians and allows for expansion of services and technology.
Call coverage: The Winneshiek Medical Center has 24/7 Emergency Room coverage. The Family Medicine physicians accept first call. Call will be 1:7 both during the week and weekends.
Location: More than 8,500 people live in Decorah, a city located in the scenic bluff country of northeast Iowa along the picturesque banks of the Upper Iowa River. Three airports are located within a 75-mile radius of Decorah: in Rochester, MN; Waterloo, IA; and La Crosse, WI. The Upper Iowa River, which runs through Decorah, is one of 27 in the country designated as a National Scenic and Recreation River. The area offers ample opportunity for trout fishing, hunting, cross-country and Alpine skiing, camping, hiking, cycling and canoeing.
Decorah has 13 public parks and 3 golf courses. A 25-yard indoor pool, tennis courts (6 indoor/12 outdoor), running tracks (200-meter indoor/400-meter outdoor) and weight training room are available for use at Luther College, a four-year, private liberal arts college located in Decorah. The people of Decorah and the surrounding region support an active regional arts council, community theater and community concert series. Visitors from around the world travel to Decorah each July for Nordic Fest. The festival and Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, a world-class museum housing art exhibits and cultural and historic resources, celebrate the area's rich Scandinavian heritage.
Luther College also offers frequent appearances by distinguished public figures, theater groups, musicians and educators. Decorah offers strong public and private educational programs at all levels. The 2,500 students and faculty of Luther College are committed to liberal learning in the arts and sciences in 44 individual majors and 16 pre-professional programs. There are 155 full-time and 38 part-time faculty members; 68 percent hold a Ph.D. and an additional 11 percent hold other terminal degrees. The ratio of students to faculty is 13:1. Luther College grants the Bachelor of Arts degree. A full theater and dance program and twelve performing music ensembles, including two bands, five choirs, an orchestra, the Opera Workshop, the Jazz Lab Band, and the Collegeium Musicum, are major co-curricular interests. Decorah Community Schools are a recognized leader in Iowa education. The schools' dropout rate is a fraction of the state average. Consistent test scores above the 90th percentile are the schools' benchmark for success.
