SUMMARY The primary purpose of the Cytogenetic Technologist position is to independently perform developmental procedures using analytical methodology in a clinical cytogenetic laboratory.
KEY FUNCTIONS 1. Utilizing available technology performs quality development analysis and documents results of specimens in accordance with regulatory and Cytogenetic standards at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center: ' Perform developmental Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) processing procedures on all specimen types with working knowledge of all probes in laboratory library ' Evaluates specimen integrity independently performs tissue culture, harvesting, banding, routine chromosome analyses, FISH procedures and Solid tumor processes. ' Performs accurate FISH developmental analysis of metaphase and/or interphase cells incorporating automated imaging system and signal interpretation. Summarizes test results using FISH ISCN nomenclature. ' Develop, validate and incorporate new FISH probes into the current library on all specimen types, including bone marrow and solid tumor. ' Develop, validate and incorporate new home-brew probes when commercially available probes are not an option. ' Evaluate new developmental technologies and equipment for the advancement of the lab ' Develop FISH projects as they are assigned ' Exercises sound judgment when reviewing developmental results and correlating them with current findings so as to detect clinical status change from previous results. Demonstrates knowledge of normal differential values for bone marrow and peripheral blood. ' Maintains proficiency in all computer functions to assure that results generated, reviewed and reported are in compliance with approved policies documented in the procedure manual. ' Attends/participates in sectional in-services and meetings. 2. Performs developmental analysis and documents results in accordance with Cytogenetic productivity guidelines at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center: ' Remains knowledgeable of all policies, procedures and protocols which are essential to the timeliness of results reported while assuring that productivity is adequate to meet the demands of the section's workload as assessed by review of utilization, productivity documents and direct observation by supervisors. ' Adjusts to multiple demands and appropriately shifts prioritizes and organizes workflow to assure completion of developmental testing required meeting productivity for specific tests. ' Remains conversant and knowledgeable of test theory, utilizing familiarity with testing to assist with troubleshooting and problematic testing disruptions thus diminishing delays in result reporting. 3. Follows all quality and safety standards in accordance with the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Cytogenetic policies and procedures: ' Performs all developmental testing in compliance with quality control, quality improvement, and quality assurance measures and remains knowledgeable to all general safety, biohazard and chemical guidelines while adhering to regulatory mandates as observed by supervisors and/or safety staff. 4 EDUCATION Required: Bachelor's degree in a related science field. Preferred: Graduate of a Cytogenetic Technology Program.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION Required: Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Cytogenetics (CLSp(CG)) by the National Certifying Agency (NCA). Failure to obtain certification within 18 months of hire will result in termination of employment.
