Summary:Performs a wide variety of laboratory tests by manual and automated methods or use of various mechanical or electronic devices within the Toxicology Laboratory and Special Chemistry. Such duties as therapeutic drug monitoring, drug of abuse screen by EIA method on Olympus AU2700 analyzers. Thin Layer Chromatography by Toxi-lab system, drug confirmation by GCMS method, analysis of drugs and other compounds by LCMS/MS method. Volatile analysis by GC method, sedative and hypnotic screen using silica gel TLC plate, and urine spot tests. Special Chemistry analysis such as LS ratios, PG's, Amniotic Bilirubin, etc. Performs the full range of duties from specimen procurement through data analysis and reporting, in order to provide data for use in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and/or research of human disease. Performs chain of custody testing.
o Required:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
Must possess the skill, knowledge, and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
Must possess a valid California Clinical Lab Scientist License
Must be willing to testify in court regarding testing activities if subpoenaed
Must be willing to work variable shifts and overtime as required
Must perform troubleshooting and routine maintenance
Must be familiar with QC
o Desired:

Accurately and efficiently performs automated procedures and a variety of manual procedures.
*Accurately and efficiently prepares patient data
*Accurately handles/processes/tests specimens according to appropriate protocol
*Accurately maintains required records of laboratory tests conducted, preparing reports as required
Accurately performs laboratory inventory control and other clerical duties as needed
Appropriately assists in the training of new staff, students, and co-workers, as needed or required
Appropriately instructs others in the performance of new/modified procedures
*Appropriately investigates specific procedural modifications and unexpected test results to determine reason for non-conformance to established patterns
Appropriately provides quality control surveillance at various levels
*Appropriately utilizes knowledge of physiological significance of test results
Collaborates with physicians regarding the merits of particular tests, suggesting alternative methods when appropriate
*Correctly performs mathematical calculations
Effectively assists in the development and evaluation of procedures
*Efficiently and accurately uses appropriate techniques
*Ensures lab instruments are functioning properly and appropriately handles repairs
Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots specialized laboratory equipment
*Oversees the work of support staff to ensure that proper procedures and techniques are followed
