JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Greets patients and escorts them to the exam room; prepares patient for exam; maintains timely flow of patients.
2. Takes appropriate vital signs and records on patient's chart; may also assist in taking patient history.
3. May administer injections if the individual has met the requirements of the state of Washington Department of Licensing Health Care Assistant regulations and has a current certification from the Department of Licensing.
4. Assists the physician as needed with procedures and patient exams.
5. Orders lab tests, x-rays, and other tests, procedures and treatments as directed by the physician or provider; instructs patient in collection of samples and in testing procedures and requirements; follows through to be sure that reports are obtained and the patient is notified of results and any necessary follow-up.
6. Insures that daily charge slips are completed and sent to Data Processing in a timely manner. Has a working knowledge of billing rules and regulations.
7. Answers phones; answers patient questions; may triage patients on the phone and in person and assess symptoms if these skills and sufficient knowledge and skills have been demonstrated; relays important information to the physician or provider and provides follow-up to the patient.
8. May call in medication orders to a pharmacy per physician orders.
9. Participates (to a varying degree depending on the department) in appointment making and oversees the appointment schedule; insures that preference is given to patients with acute problems.
10. May participate in patient and family teaching per physician's or provider's orders if sufficient knowledge and skill in this area has been demonstrated.
11. Assists in maintaining a complete and legally correct medical record on all patients.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or GED
Certification as a Health Care Assistant with theWashingtonStateDept. of Licensing. Categories A, C, and E
Completion of a formal Medical Assistant training program to include a 160 hr externship program is required
Previous experience as a Medical Assistant in an ambulatory care setting is desirable.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
CurrentStateof Washington Department of Licensing certification as a Health Care Assistant.
Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Basic knowledge of the care given in a medical setting; knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures; knowledge of medications that are called in to pharmacies; knowledge of the principles of IM, SQ, and intradermal medication administration and of the medications that are being given; knowledge of patient education principles; skill in using various types of equipment; skill in taking vital signs; the ability to relate effectively with co-workers, physicians, and staff and function as part of a team; the ability to relate effectively to patients, guests, and the general public; the ability to work efficiently amidst on-going distractions; the ability to communicate effectively in written form; the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; good organizational skills; the ability to speak to others with a pleasant phone manner; attention to detail and numerical accuracy; the ability to respond calmly in an emergency situation; the ability to reason and think logically to solve problems; the ability to use judgment and make decisions.
