Job Description This position is responsible for participating in all aspects of care of the surgery patient. The mission is to facilitate such care in conjunction with the surgical house staff, and under the supervision of the staff surgeon. In addition, the position supports other activities of the general surgery service. This position requires a license as a nurse practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Emphasis is on direct patient care to General Surgery Service patients, working in coordination with the staff surgeon, house staff, hospital staff, and the patient for the following duties:
1. Performs and documents patient evaluation (history and physical examinations) in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
2. Responsible for Orders and interprets diagnostic tests.
3. Writes orders for medication and treatments for surgery patients.
4. Responsible for dictation of discharge summaries and transfer orders.
5. Participates in patient rounds and case conferences for assigned service.
6. Maintains, follows, and participates in developing standards of care, clinical pathways, and patient care protocols.
7. Supports and works with house staff, attending surgeons and other colleagues to provide and coordinate patient care in the following locations: Emergency Department, intensive care units, inpatient floors, and General Surgery Clinics.
8. Works in collaboration with attending surgeons and house staff to provide patient/family support and educate patients/families about medical care, aids in discharge disposition, responds to post-discharge telephone calls from patients/families.
9. Identifies ED, ICU and other inpatient staff learning needs.
10. Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through consultation, formal and informal education, and review of literature.
11. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
. NP licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required; acute care graduate nursing education highly preferred.
. At least 3-5 years experience as Nurse Practitioner with part of that time dealing with highly acute patients on a surgical service; previous experience in an NP or RN in a surgery service strongly preferred.
. Excellent interpersonal skills in working with professional and non-professional staff in providing patient care.
. Must be able to work independently, displaying initiative and appropriate judgement, as well as acting as a team member of the Surgery service in providing a collaborative approach to patient care.
