Position Summary:



Manages the daily activities of the multiple sections of the clinical laboratories within UMC main laboratory, point of care testing activities, and all the outpatient clinics. Duties include recommending appropriate laboratory staff at outpatient clinics, determining appropriate staffing levels to achieve organizational goals for departments within the main laboratory, reviewing and approving purchases of equipment/kits used in outpatient clinics, participates in the departmental budget and strategic planning, selection of equipment and tests, and compliance with the multiple regulatory agencies governing medical laboratories.

Requirements

Education/Experience & Licensing/Certification Requirements:Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, or closely related field, completion of an approved clinical laboratory practicum or internship, and six (6) years of technical experience in a clinical laboratory, two (2) years of which were in a supervisory/managerial role, or three (3) years of which were in a lead/senior id State of Nevada license to practice as a General Supervisor and ASCP/NCA certification as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist.



Prefer:Current supervisory/managerial experience and experience with the automation line.



Knowledge of: Modern principles and practices of effective management; modern principles and practices of supervision; conflict resolution techniques; staff scheduling and work flow analysis; local state and federal rules and regulations affecting medical laboratories; accrediting agencies requirements; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures; age specific patient care practices.

Skill in: Conflict resolution; projecting, assigning and monitoring the work of others; effectively supervising and training staff; performing statistical analysis; applying quality assurance and performance improvement processes; providing leadership; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or an eligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
