If you’re doing a healthcare job search, chances are you’ve already found more positions available than you can count. There has been an explosion of opportunities in care careers from healthcare management to entry-level hospital positions. Some jobs in the healthcare industry don’t even require a four-year degree, making a career in healthcare more attractive than ever.
What is creating so many new opportunities? Some sources report as many as four million new careers in healthcare by 2014. In today’s economy, with layoffs and foreclosures so prominent in the headlines, how is this possible?
Healthcare jobs are on the rise for many reasons, but one factor is the sheer number of Americans getting older. Between now and 2030, the number of people age 55 or older will swell from about 60 million to approximately more than 107 million. Age-related health complications make for a big part of the healthcare demand in America, and that demand is about to double over time.
Another factor is the shortage of qualified doctors and other care providers. Recent reports show a 51% drop in the number of medical school students going into primary care careers. By 2014 it is expected that there will be a shortage of about 40 thousand doctors—right when the need for them is expected to be quite high.
All this translates into big challenges for health workers and healthcare executives alike. Are you thinking about a healthcare career in health management? Consider working your way up from an in-demand position and transitioning into management mid-career. This has two distinct advantages. You fill an immediate need as a newcomer to a career in healthcare, and you get the benefit of knowing the people and issues you’ll eventually have to manage.
There’s no substitute for experience in the field when it comes to making critical management decisions. The more experience you have as someone “in the trenches”, the better you’ll be as a manager or executive in healthcare. So how does this tie in with the rise of healthcare jobs? With an anticipated increase in the number of job openings, combined with a greater predicted shortage in the number of qualified applicants, any healthcare manager is going to need to hang on to their qualified people.
Those who bring hands-on experience to their management jobs can better manage, train, and offer incentives to their staffs. The more experience you have in the field, the more effective you’ll be in a management capacity when the time comes.
